The trailer of ‘Swathi Kolai Vazhakku,’ a film based on murder of Swathi, the 24-year-old software engineer, and the real life incidents surrounding the subsequent investigation was released by the makers on Monday.

The movie’s trailer depicted the murder case as seen by a police officer investigating the murder. Swathi was murdered in the Nungambakkam railway station on June 24 2016, in the morning as she was waiting for a train.

An accused in the case, Ramkumar, who was caught a few months later, committed suicide by biting a live wire inside prison in September that year. The movie stars Ajmal, playing the lead role of an investigating officer and a host of newcomers playing supporting roles.

Director Ramesh Selvan said that he had begun writing the script in August before Ramkumar was nabbed by the police. “I followed the investigation and spoke to a few acquaintances of both Swathi and Ramkumar, as well as officials investigating the case as research for the movie,” he said.

When asked about a possible backlash from the family members of those involved in the case as he has retained all the original names and has reproduced the case on screen, he said that he was going to screen the movie for both the families separately.

“I will take the film and screen it to both Swathi’s and Ramkumar’s families separately and get their approval before I proceed with the release,” Mr Ramesh added.
